The Tranquilities Series is the result of a breast cancer diagnosis received in 1992 by Rev. Donna Shenk, a registered nurse, and currently the chaplain at Ephrata Community Hospital in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Rev. Shenk has extensive medical and religious training, yet she had the same reactions as other persons who are diagnosed with cancer: shock, grief, fear, anger, and worry.
Those emotions filled her, but they did not defeat her. In addition to her traditional training, Rev. Shenk had learned to use Guided Imagery, and she used the process through every step of her journey to recovery. Seeing that others experiencing the stress of cancer could also benefit from Guided Imagery, she visualized the Tranquilities Series and assembled a team to develop it.

Guided imagery, as used in the Tranquilities Series, is audio recordings on CD, designed to help individuals picture and imagine a peaceful safe place, and then teach them how they can use images, personal faith if desired and aromas to change how they view stressful situations. As a result, the listener may reduce stress levels, feel restored and whole, build courage, have spirits lifted and self-esteem restored, and be helped to find peace of mind.

The Tranquilities Series consists of five CDs and five aromatherapy blends, each dealing with a typical emotion experienced by persons with cancer. Each aromatherapy blend corresponds to one of the CDs. The cancer patient smells the aromatherapy blends during the imagery, creating a conditioned response and can use them anytime to reinforce positive thoughts.
Each CD consists of gentle soothing music, realistic digitally recorded environmental sounds and the voices of Rev. Donna Shenk, a hospital chaplain and Robert Miller, a naturopathic health consultant. The male and female voices help the patient to relax and then gently guide the patient in creating images in his or her mind that teach new patterns of thinking
The Tranquilities Series offers the option of incorporating the patient's personal faith by inviting God's presence if this would be beneficial. If the patient prefers not to use this, a second track on the CD omits these references.

The Tranquilities Series is easy to use. The patient simply finds a quiet time and place, and listens to the CD recordings (approximately 20 minutes each), allowing the music, aromas, and gentle voices to provide them with the emotional and spiritual support needed at this stressful time.
